HAND
THERAPY

What is Hand Therapy?

Hand therapy typically consists of evaluating and treating a variety of injuries and conditions involving the upper extremity (shoulder, elbow, forearm, wrist, hand, and fingers) by a physical or occupational therapist. The goal of hand therapy depends on your goals as a patient. These can include getting you back to work, improving your quality of life, or returning to a sport that you’ve had to stop, or cut back on, due to your symptoms. Interventions might include soft tissue massage, stretching, strengthening, along with exercises to be completed at home. Some of the hand therapy conditions we can treat include:

  • Tennis elbow

  • Golfer’s elbow

  • Bursitis

  • Tendonitis

  • Nerve irritations

  • Carpal tunnel syndrome

  • Ganglion Cysts

  • Thumb or wrist sprains

  • DeQuervain’s Syndrome

How Can Hand Therapy Help?

Hand therapy can help you in many ways. Whether you are needing to decrease pain, decrease swelling, improve range of motion, increase strength, or a combination of all those things, Back in Action Therapy can help you with your hand physical therapy needs in Las Cruces and Alamogordo.

What Happens at the First Visit?

During your first visit, a physical therapist will evaluate your injury and determine what hand physical therapy needs you have. The therapist will assess your range of motion, strength, and functional abilities to determine what exercises and interventions will work best for your injury. You will be given a home exercise program on your first session, and your therapist will begin to develop your plan for your future hand therapy sessions.

How Long is Each Treatment?

Each hand physical therapy session may vary slightly in length. However, it is typically best to plan for each session to last about one hour.

How Often Will I Have Treatment?

The number of treatment sessions will be determined by your physical therapist. Typically, you’ll have sessions between one and three times per week, but your therapist will discuss the best frequency for your particular needs.

Will I Do Home Exercises?

Most hand therapy programs will include having you perform exercises at home.  This will frequently decrease the required treatment duration, and will allow you to get better faster. Our goal is to get you back to the activities that you love, and usually home exercises will help with that process.
